The Danbury Park Babies came about when a coach load of expectant mothers were evacuated from the East End of London at the beginning of the Second World War.

It seems no one expected them or wanted them when they arrived in Danbury in 1939. Mrs Wigan (wife of General Wigan, owner of Danbury Palace) took them in, turning her sitting room into a sleeping ward and ultimately Danbury Park into an Emergency Maternity Hospital.
